Case Study

As a healthcare provider to state and county correctional facilities, Corizon is constantly under pressure from its clients to increase value and provide effective-pricing solutions. One Corizon client, the Missouri Department of Corrections, frequently had to move offenders to offsite locations for specialized care. Transporting an offender offsite presents a number of concerns for the correctional facilities and hospitals, most importantly public safety, as it presents an opportunity to escape.

In addition to public safety, correctional facilities have to consider travel and personnel costs. Each offender requires a one or two-officer escort, while high-risk offenders may require more officers. There are additional costs for officer overtime and meals, fuel and wear and tear on state vehicles.

Having provided more than 16,000 telepsychology sessions annually, Corizon approached SKC to expand into clinical telemedicine at the suggestion of an existing SKC customer.

Due to the environment, correctional facilities require safety features not found in a typical telemedicine cart. Additionally, cords and medical devices that could potentially become weapons to an offender can’t be dangling from the side of the cart. Every piece of equipment must be stored in a fully enclosed, lockable and durable cabinet. Regulations also require that all production has to be prebuilt and precisely controlled for consistency and safety.

SKC telemedicine specialists worked with both Corizon and the Missouri Department of Corrections to develop a cart that meets every safety feature required for safe use in a prison. The cart features AMD medical devices including the AMD-400 camera, providing diagnostic quality images from a variety of medical scopes. The cart also features AGNES server, that provides the ability to send and receive live stethoscope sound along with an AMD digital stethoscope.

The Crestron control module and touch panel allow for ease of use on a simplified call control center with custom programming written specifically for Corizon. A Polycom HDX 8000 is included for HD videoconferencing as well as sharing the diagnostic images to the far site.

Since the original installation of two sites at correctional facilities in Missouri, SKC and Corizon have improved the features of the cart and have expanded to 13 additional sites throughout Missouri and have added two units in Indiana.

“SKC has been great in developing a telemedicine cart that fits our very specific and regulated needs,” said Ralf Salke, Vice President of Missouri Operations within Corizon.
